Antioxidants and Free Radical Damage

Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our food and beverages which can prevent or slow the oxidation damage to our bodies. When our cells use oxygen, they produce free radicals as a by product. Free radicals are highly reactive atoms or groups of atoms that have one or more unpaired electrons. This damage can occur naturally or from outside sources such as tobacco smoke, pollutants and toxins from the air we breathe and the foods we eat.

Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers" and therefore prevent and repair damage done by free radicals. Health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are all in part, attributed to free radical damage. Polyphenols found in tea may be the antioxidants you are searching for.
