Genmaicha, also known as popcorn tea, is a specialty Japanese style green tea from Kagoshima Prefecture. Genmaicha is a blend of Japanese style sencha and toasted rice. During the firing of the rice, some of the kernels pop and look like miniature popcorn kernels, hence the name popcorn tea. The fresh vegetative character of the green tea is imparted on the cup but is tempered with the bakey character of the toasted rice. There is a natural sweetness and toasty finish associated with genmaicha that make it a favorite among green tea drinkers.
